The Revolution Besieged : Lenin 1917-1923 (vol. 3)

Description

When Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik party led the first successful workers revolution in history, they were under no illusions that their work was finished with the overthrow of capitalism in Russia. As the fledgling workers' state was gripped by a civil war, the revolution's leaders remained steadfast in their commitment to spreading their successes across all of Europe. Tony Cliff (1917-2000) spent his life developing revolutionary Marxism against Stalinism. From his early days as a revolutionary in British-occupied Palestine to the high points of struggle in post-war Britain, Cliff worked to restore lost ideas and traditions and fan the flames of resistance.

Investigations into Formal Slavic Linguistics : Contributions of the Fourth European Conference on Formal Description of Slavic Languages - FDSL IV Held at Potsdam University, November 28-30, 2001 Part 1 and 2

Description

Formal Slavic Linguistics is concerned with explicit description of prosody, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, information structure and language acquisition or impairments of language (aphasia) of Slavic languages within a certain theoretical framework of Principles and Parameters (Chomsky 1995 passim). But the two parts also illustrate the diversity of approaches we use in attempting to reflect the entire range of subfields within a given theoretical framework of cognitive science.

The Buxton Hall Barbecue's Book of Smoke: Wood-Smoked Meat, Sides and More

Description

Smoke savory meats and vegetables at home and cook signature recipes from the chef-driven kitchen of Buxton Hall Barbecue in Asheville, North Carolina. In an age of bulk-bought brisket and set-it-and-forget-it electric smokers, Buxton Hall Barbecue stands apart from the average restaurant. With three pits at the heart of an open kitchen and hogs sourced from local farmers that raise them right, chef Elliott Moss is smoking meat in accordance with time-honored traditions. In Buxton Hall Barbecue's Book of Smoke, believers in slow-smoked, old-fashioned barbecue will learn how to build and master their own pit, right at home. Start small with chicken or pit beef and work your way up to a whole hog. If you're not yet ready for the pit or limited on space, Moss also teaches easy, economical ways to infuse wood-smoke into your food. The recipes include all of the Buxton Hall favorites. Learn how to make their deep-fried smoked catfish, smoky pimento cheese, turnip soup with charred onions, or slow-cooked collards. Other recipes give the inside scoop on how a barbecue restaurant makes use of a whole hog with a waste-nothing approach: Brussels sprouts with crispy cracklin', classic South-Carolina style hash, chicken bog, and much more. Finish the meal with Buxton's take on classic southern desserts like banana pudding pie, grape hull pie, or s'mores with homemade marshmallows. Cowboy Small takes good care of his horse, Cactus. In return, Cactus helps Cowboy Small get work done on the range. Together they round up cattle for branding and live the good life. At night, Cowboy Small eats at the chuck wagon, sings with his friends, and sleeps under the stars.

When everything falls apart, love remains . . . What is a homeland? When does it become a national territory? Why have so many people been willing to die for such places throughout the twentieth century? What is the essence of the Promised Land? Following the Leap over a Wall: Earthy Spirituality for Everyday Christians ebook pdf acclaimed and controversial The Invention of the Jewish People, Shlomo Sand examines the mysterious sacred land that has become the site of the longest-running national struggle of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Invention of the Land of Israel deconstructs the age-old legends surrounding the Holy Land and the prejudices that continue to suffocate it. The invention of the modern concept of the "Land of Israel" in the nineteenth century, he argues, not only facilitated the colonization of the Middle East and the establishment of the State of Israel, it is also what is threatening Israel's existence today.

The Forty Rules of Love: A Novel of Rumi

Description

A mesmerizing tale of love-from the author of "The Bastard of Istanbul" Elif Shafak, the most widely read female writer in Turkey, has earned a growing fan base all over the world with her bestselling "The Bastard of Istanbul." In "The Forty Rules of Love," her lyrical, imaginative new novel about the famous Sufi mystic Rumi, Shafak effortlessly blends East and West, past and present, to create a dramatic, compelling, and exuberant tale about how love works in the world. Shafak unfolds two parallel narratives-one set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the wandering dervish known as Shams of Tabriz, and one contemporary, as an unhappy American housewife, inspired by Rumi's message of love, finds the courage to transform her life.

When everything falls apart, love remains . . . What is a homeland? When does it become a national territory? Why have so many people been willing to die for such places throughout the twentieth century? What is the essence of the Promised Land? Leap over a Wall: Earthy Spirituality for Everyday Christians

Description

Of all the characters in the Bible, it is David who is most human. His life is lived on the "rough-edged actuality" of real life, and his relationship with God is an energetic one. Through the passions, the trials, and the lyrical poetry of this beloved figure, we gain powerful insights into the role of God in our own lives. In this inspirational volume, Professor Eugene H. Peterson, translator of "The Message, " uses stories from David's epic life as vivid lessons in everyday faith and spirituality. Exploring David's experiences of friendship, grief, love, sin, and suffering, as well as sanctuary, beauty, and wilderness, he reawakens us to the enduring truths behind these beloved stories."As we tell and listen to the David story, we're at the same time being trained in the nature of story itself as the primary literary form for receiving God's revelation." --from "Leap Over a Wall" "Eugene H. Peterson skillfully uses the David story to talk not about David, but about you and about me. "Leap Over a Wall" is the human story in all its wonder and terror and pity." --Richard J. Foster, author of "Celebration of Discipline" and "Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home" "The author brings the Old Testament world revealingly close to our own century, and he makes vivid the notion that God's purposes are worked out in the ordinariness of specific human lives." -- "Publisher's Weekly" "This Everyman analysis brings new life to the stories of David and Goliath, David and Bathsheba, David and Absalom, David and the Temple." -- "The Washington Post"

When everything falls apart, love remains . . . What is a homeland? When does it become a national territory? Why have so many people been willing to die for such places throughout the twentieth century? What is the essence of the Promised Land? What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East

Description

A bestselling account of why the Islamic world has been losing the conflict with the West for 300 years - and the frustration and humiliation this has produced. For many centuries, Islam was the world's greatest, most open, most enlightened, most creative, most powerful civilisation. And then everything changed, as the previously despised West won victory after victory, first on the battlefield and in the marketplace, then in almost every aspect of public and even private life. Bernard Lewis examines the anguished reaction of the Islamic world as it tried to understand why things had changed, and he provides a fascinating portrait of a culture in turmoil. Some Middle Easterners asked not 'who did this to us?' but 'where did we go wrong?'; while others fastened blame on a series of scapegoats, both internal and external - and the results are very much with us today.

Duhigg has a gift for asking just the right question, and then igniting the same curiosity in the rest of us. In "Smarter Faster Better" he finds provocative answers to a riddle of our age. Jim Collins, author of "Good to Great"" "" 'People should not leave looking-glasses hanging in their rooms any more than they should leave open cheque books or letters confessing some hideous crime.' 'If she concealed so much and knew so much one must prize her open with the first tool that came to hand - the What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East download epub imagination.' Virginia Woolf's writing tested the boundaries of modern fiction, exploring the depths of human consciousness and creating a new language of sensation and thought. Sometimes impressionistic, sometimes experimental, sometimes brutally cruel, sometimes surprisingly warm and funny, these five stories describe love lost, friendships formed and lives questioned. This book includes The Lady in the Looking Glass, A Society, The Mark on the Wall, Solid Objects and Lappin and Lapinova.

George Mikes: How to be a Brit: The Classic Bestselling Guide

How to be a Brit: The Classic Bestselling Guide

Description

George Mikes has written many successful books on a variety of interesting subjects, but one so successful as those on the subject most central to his own experience: his adopted country. The first of these came out in 1946: the ever famous "How to be an Alien." Later he enlarges the picture with "How to be inimitable" and "How to be Decadent." All three books were illustrated by the master of the cartoonists' art, the late Nicolas Bentley. Here they are, all in one volume, which will make life much easier for today's would-be Brits than it was for those who pervaded them. It is said that a few of the latter actually failed to become indistinguishable from the genuine British article because they found it too tiresome to seek out three separate books: a misfortune that need never again occur to anyone.

For fans of John Green and Rainbow Rowell comes this powerful novel about a girl with cancer who creates a take-no-prisoners bucket list that sets off a war at school-only to discover she's gone into remission. When sixteen-year-old Alice is diagnosed with leukemia, she vows to spend her final months righting wrongs. So she convinces her best friend, Harvey, to help her with a crazy bucket list that's as much about revenge as it is about hope. But just when Alice's scores are settled, she goes into remission, and now she must face the consequences of all she's said and done. Contemporary realistic-fiction readers who love romantic stories featuring strong heroines will find much to savor in this standout debut. Following the Battle of Britain, the RAF started taking the air war to the Germans. A small number of bombers, escorted by large numbers of fighters tried to force the Luftwaffe into battle. Much air combat ensued with RAF light bombers escorted by scores of fighters, but it was not until Germany invaded Russia in June 1941 that operations were stepped up in an effort to take pressure of Stalin's Russian Front. Two major German fighter groups, JG26 and JG2, were, however, more than able to contain the RAF's operations, How to be a Brit: The Classic Bestselling Guide download epub generally only intercepting when conditions were in their favour. As the author describes, over-claiming combat victories by pilots of both sides is amazing, and several of the top aces had inflated scores. Fighter Command, however, lost massively even though they believed they were inflicting equal, if not better, losses on the Luftwaffe. This battle of attrition was virtually a reverse of the 1940 Battles over England, and pilots who had to bale out over France, were lost completely. The book covers the 100+ Circus operations and their accompanying fighter Sweeps in detail, whilst also mentioning lesser operations where the RAF were concerned. The tactics employed by both sides are examined and show how each fighter force quickly adapted to changing conditions tempered by experiences gained in air combat.

Am I Alone Here?: Notes on Living to Read and Reading to Live

Description

Peter Orner reads and writes wherever he finds himselfin a hospital cafeteria, a canoe in northern Minnesota, the Las Vegas Cafe in Albania, or on a bus in Haiti. Stories have always been his lifeblood, as they are the only way he has been able to make sense of a chaotic life. His father's death, his divorce, an unexpected pregnancyall are seen, one way or another, through the lens of literature. The result is what Orner calls "a book of unlearned criticism that stumbles into memoir." Among the writers Orner addresses in these essays are Isaac Babel and Zora Neale Hurston, both of whom told their truths and were silenced; Franz Kafka, who professed loneliness but actually had a far busier social life than Orner; Robert Walser, who spent the last twenty-three years of his life in a Swiss insane asylum, "working" at being crazy; and Juan Rulfo, who practiced silence. Also lauded are Virginia Woolf, Eudora Welty, Yasunari Kawabata, Saul Bellow, Mavis Gallant, John Edgar Wideman, Vaclav Havel, Gina Berriault, William Trevor, and the poet Herbert Morris, about whom almost nothing is known. Hovering over Am I Alone Here? is Peter Orner's eccentric late father, who he kept at a distance and now mourns. The book is also an elegy for the end of a marriage, as well as a celebration of the possibility of renewal. At once personal and panoramic,Am I Alone Here? conveys the absolutely necessary place of stories in Orner's life, which will inspire readers to return to the essential stories of their own lives.
